Writing for Downtrodden: Poet Hemanta Dalapati Suspended from Job

Poet Hemanta Dalapati was suspended from his job for writing poetry for the downtrodden. He is serving as a government teacher at DIET, Bhawanipatana.

Being a man from the tribal community he himself lived and experienced the traumatised and marginalised life of poor primitive communities. He used to write their pain and predicaments through his poems.

Hemant , well-known Odia young poet, a powerful voice of Adivasi–Dalit identity is arbitrary suspended from his government service without giving any chance for explanation for his alleged involvement on various uncalled activities.

According to source, Hemant Dalpati , who himself belongs to an Adivasi community,was a Teacher Educator in DIET, Kalahandi at Bhawanipatna. He received a letter from Deputy Director (Administration) TE and SCERT, Odisha, Bhubaneswar (Letter No.4A-TE-05/2014 2821, dated 4.5.2017) calling explanation for his involvement on anti-government activities within a week, The letter was sent in ordinary post and has been delivered to him on 21.06.2017 and he was to reply within a week. But before his any explanation he has been not only suspended on June 21, 2017 (OO. No. 4A-te-05/2014 3465/TE&SCERT. Letter received on June 23, 2017) but also has been placed during his suspension hundreds of k.m. away from his H.O. to DIET, Bhadrak at Agarpada Balasore.

Poets, intellectuals and activists across the state have reacted to this heinous act by Government authorities.

In a joint written statement, senior poet Kumar Hassan and poet-editor Lenin Kumar have condemned the odious move by Government Odisha.

The statement reads,

We strongly condemn such apathetic attitude of the State toward a poet of people to strangle the constitutional right for freedom of speech and expression and demand for immediate justice.

Social media flooded with condemnation of government apathy for poet, teacher and activist Hemanta Dalapati.

Poets, artists, intellectuals, activists and journalists are planning a statewide protest against government demanding immediate reinstatement of Hemanta Dalapati.
