By Odisha Story Bureau, Bhubaneswar:
Senior political leader, former parliamentarian, Aama Odisha Party chief and the editor of largest circulated Odia daily Sambad Soumya Ranjan Patnaik joined Biju Janata Dal today morning.
He reached Naveen Niwas, residence of Odisha CM and BJD chief Naveen Patnaik, with his close political aids at 10.20 am and officially announced his new start with the ruling party at 11.15 am.
He was expected to join yesterday (6 march 2018). But, according to sources, he consulted astrologer and found a perfect timing today.
The maverick and ambitious politician and son-in-law of former chief minister and former Assam Governor Janaki Ballav Patnaik, started his political career with Congress in the last decade of 20th century. Later he joined Bharatiya Janata Party. Again he made a comeback to the Congress, drawn by the prospect of a ticket for the Bhubaneswar Lok Sabha seat in 1996. He went on to win that seat. In 1998 he contested again but lost to the Biju Janata Dal candidate. When the future looked uncertain he assumed charge of the NCP when Pawar founded it after breaking away from the Congress. Again he joined Congress. In early 21st century, with the BJP’s fortunes being on the upswing again he is believed to be planning a return to that party. But didn’t do it.
After he was expelled from Congress in 2014 for alleged anti-party campaign he floated a new political party Aama Odisha Party (AOP). But he failed to win Khandapada assembly constituency for the second time.
Today he joined BJD and it’s expected than his party will merge with BJD soon.
In his reaction Soumya Ranjan Said,
I joined BJD for the sake of Odisha’s development, pride and dignity. I don’t eye any post or political profit.
Soumya Ranjan Patnaik used to be a strong critic of BJD for more than a decade. It’s expected that KIIT founder Achyuta Samanta may join BJD today.
