Ashit Kumar Swain, Odia geosciensist Ashit Kumar Swain from Ganjam district,has been awarded with the National Geoscience Awards for the year 2017. He is nominated for this prestigious national accolade for his contribution towards research in the field of Geoscience.
Last week Shri Ram Nath Kovind, Hon’ble President of India conferred the National Geoscience Awards for the year 2017 in New Delhi. Shri Narendra Singh Tomar, Hon’ble Minister of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Mines, Shri Haribhai Parthibhai Chaudhary, Hon’ble Minister of State (Mines), Shri Anil Mukim, Secretary, Ministry of Mines, Shri N. Kutumba Rao, Director General, Geological Survey of India, senior officers of Ministry of Mines, GSI, and other Central Ministries also graced the occasion.
Dr Swain is working as a scientist under Geological Survey of India (GSI) and currently posted at Gangtok, Sikkim. He has achieved Doctorate degree in geoscience. He has been involved in more than 55 research works including dozens in Antarctica. He has achieved many challenging assignments and risked his life visiting Antarctica, Himalayan Range, Schirmacher lakes etc.
Ashit Ranjan Swain is also a well known young Odia poet. He has a collection of poem Parichay, for which he bagged prestigious PEN IN Young Author Award 2017 during the second Bhubaneswar Poetry Festival (BPF 2017) at Mayfair Convention, Bhubaneswar.
He is currently working on an Odia book on his experience during several Antarctica Expeditions.
Eleven National Geoscience Awards for the year 2017 were conferred by the President on 22 geoscientists including Dr Swain, for their outstanding contributions in nine different fields of geosciences. Dr.Shib Sankar Ganguli, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur received the Young Scientist Award – 2017 for his meritorious contributions in the field of Applied Geoscience.
