Odisha Story Bureau, Bhubaneswar, May 28, 2018:
MP Baijayant Panda, an articulate and prominent face of the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in Odisha, quits the party amidst growing rift with CM Naveen Patnaik. Known as Jay Panda, he is a member of the lower house from Kendrapada Lok Sabha Constituency that was once late Biju Patnaik‘s constituency.
Office of Jay Panda twitter handle confirmed his resignation today morning. Panda has sent his resignation letter to party supremo Naveen Patnaik. He will resign from the Lok Sabha and send the formal resignation letter to the speaker soon, sources said.
In his three page resignation letter Baijayant said,
I have been viciously targeted, including being physically assaulted with stones, bricks & eggs last May in Mahanga. I was extremely saddened that even then you (Naveen Patnaik) did not bother to call to inquire about my health and safety.
He also stated about the inhumanity shown by his party colleagues during his father’s death on 22nd this month. He wrote,
Although things have been going from bad to worse for the past four years, it has plumbed the absolute depths of inhumanity when neither you (Naveen Patnaik) nor anyone from the BJD turned up to pay their last respects to my father Dr Bansidhar Panda, who as everyone knows was a very close friend, supporter, associate of Biju uncle from many decades.
At the end he wrote,
With the BJD and you yourself having made it abundantly clear that I am unwanted, it is only right for me to dissociate from it.
Panda was suspended from BJD for alleged anti-party activities on January 24 this year. Two days later on 26th January party asked him to resign from the Lok Sabha on moral and ethical grounds. BJD has also accused him of submitting false affidavit before the Election Commission during the 2014 general elections, a charge denied by the the leader.
All eyes now on whether Panda will join the BJP ?
