Talaq Over Phone, Wife Files FIR

Kendrapada:  A 24-year-old Muslim lady from Kendrapada district has filed an FIR against her husband for allegedly divorcing her over the phone by repeating the word “Talaq” thrice.

Earlier this year the Supreme Court had declared the practice of triple Talaq unconstitutional.

The husband Sk Rija Ahmad is living in Punjab. He had called his wife, Taksima Khatun, and pronounced Talaq on October 23. Khatun later tried to contact him but he was not reachable on phone. She subsequently filed an FIR at Pattamundai police station on Wednesday (24th October 2018) evening. Police also tried to contact Riji, but failed.

The couple got married in November last year. In her complaint, Khatun alleged that Ahmad was demanding dowry. When Khatun’s parents expressed their inability, Ahmad and her in-laws started torturing her mentally and physically, she wrote.

Khatun said,

My husband is fully aware of the fact that the Supreme Court had declared triple Talaq unconstitutional. He should be punished as per law.

Cops said police are likely to take legal action against Ahmad as per the recently promulgated Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Ordinance 2018, which makes the practice a cognizable offence, attracting up to three years imprisonment with a fine.
