India Wins Hockey, Naveen Hearts

Bhubaneswar: It was a satisfying result for India as the Indian Hockey team made their statement by thrashing South Africa 5-0 in a Group C match of Men’s Hockey World Cup 2018 at the Kalinga Stadium here last evening.

And Odisha’s Cm Naveen Patnaik won hearts again at the Word Cup Celebration at Cuttack. Music maestro AR Rahman and Bollywood bachelor Salman Khan were the center of attractions last evening in presence of Patnaik at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack.

Salman Khan also thanked Odisha and chief minister Naveen Patnaik for organising Men’s Hockey World Cup.

Here in Bhubaneswar, after a cagey first quarter, team India scored goals at will with man-of-the-match Simranjeet Singh getting a brace (43′, 46′). But it was Mandeep Singh who opened the floodgates for India with a 10th-minute goal. Akashdeep Singh made it 2-0 two minutes later. Lalit Upadhyay scored India’s fourth in the 45th minute.

In the evening yesterday, Belgium escaped with a 2-1 win over 11th ranked Canada. The third-ranked side took the lead in the third minute.

Canada to face South Africa and India to take on Belgium In the next round, on December 2.

Today in Group A engagements, Olympic champions Argentina will take on Spain, while New Zealand face France, who are playing their first World Cup in nearly three decades.
