Bhubaneswar: When people are empowered they are better prepared to take advantage of opportunities, they become agents of change & can more readily embrace their civic responsibilities.
Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality is the need of the hour told by dignitaries speaking on the occasion of International Day of Persons with disabilities .To mark the occasion a meeting was organised at Patna block headquarter of Keonjhar District by People’s Cultural Centre (PECUC), Keonjhar District Unit.
The estimated One Billion people living with disabilities worldwide face many barriers to inclusion in many key aspects of society. As a result, persons with disabilities do not enjoy access to society on an equal basis with others which includes areas of transportation, employment and education as well as social and political participation.
“The right to participate in public life is essential to create stable democracies, active citizenship & reduce inequalities in society” emphasized by Ranjan Kumar Mohanty ,Secretary,PECUC.Empowerment involves investing in people in jobs, health, nutrition, education & social protection” he added.
Further Mr.Mohanty told that PECUC has started a Centre for therapeutic and Rehabilitation Services for Persons with Intellectual disability with support of Department of Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Govt of Odisha.Amongst others Mr.Jagannath Naik, Chairman,Patna Panchayat Samiti,Smt.Tilottama Mohapatra ,CDPO, Partha Sarathi Bej, Science Teacher,Ratna Dash ,Treasurer,PECUC ,Nrusinha Nath Singh and Abhimanyu Raut , Media personalities spoke on the occasion.Jyoti Mohapatra, Program Manager, welcome the participants and Satya Mohanta ,District coordinator, Keonjhar gave vote of thanks.
