Puri: The Collector and District Election Officer of Puri served a show-cause notice to Sambit Patra, BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from the constituency, for alleged violation of Model Code of Conduct.
Sambit had on Monday (25 March) took out an election rally in Puri without obtaining necessary permission. Even Congress and BJD had alleged it as a ‘religion-based’ campaign. Yesterday Puri collector issued him the notice.
The Congress had alleged that Sambit had held an idol of Lord Jagannath during his rally and had also posted pictures on social media holding the idol of the deity. Congress said this was the violation of Model Code of Conduct as the Election Commission of India has clearly mentioned that no election can be fought on basis of any religion, caste, creed or culture. A police complaint in this regard has also been lodged at Singhadwar Police Station.
Biju Janata Dal (BJD) had also alleged the action of Sambit during the election rally clearly reflects BJP’s communal ideology.
