Bhubaneswar: Popular for his simplicity, the two-time BJP MLA from Nilagiri assembly segment in Balasore district, Pratap Sarangi won the Lok Sabha elections from Balasore constituency. Pratap Sarangi defeated sitting BJD MP and millionaire Rabindra Kumar Jena.
A photograph of him packing his bags in his bamboo hut went viral after the BJP leader won the Lok Sabha elections and was called to Delhi. People lauded Sarangi and called him Odisha’s Modi.
A good orator, both in Odia and Sanskrit, the RSS follower, is popular for riding around the villages in a bicycle. He, however, recently shifted his campaign in an auto.
After graduating from Fakir Mohan College (now a University) in Balasore, Sarangi wanted to become a monk in Ramkrishna Math, but he was encouraged to take up social work.
He was then associated with RSS and VHP. Pratap Sarangi also reportedly opened schools in tribal areas.
