A one-day symposium on eminent odia poet Nirmala Devi (1907-1997) was organised by Sahitya Akademi yesterday (22nd October 2016) at Idcol Auditorium in Bhubaneswar. A galaxy of eminent literary luminaries attended this function. A mellifluous invocation by Odisha’s golden voice Pranab Patnaik who rendered Nirmala Devi’s classic poem “tume barna bihina paraa” set the tone for the discussions on a poet who is considered unique in her genre of mystic love poems.
Secretary Central Sahitya Akademi K. Sreenivasarao delivered the welcome address. Eminent poet Ramakanta Rath inaugurated the function which was chaired by Jnanpith Shri Sitakant Mahapatra.
Nirmala Devi Kabita Samagra, a collection of 300 poems by Nirmala Devi was launched by eminent guests during the inaugural session.
Delivering the keynote address, eminent thinker and poet Shri Haraprasad Das opined that Nirmala Devi , with her stellar contributions in lyricism and theme singularly deserves the unique position of “odia chhayavadi” poet. Gourahari Das spoke about Nirmala Devi’s body of work while publisher Panchami Manoo Ukil recounted the process of rediscovering Nirmala Devi’s poetry after thirty years.
In the technical session which was chaired by Shri Phani Mohanty, scholarly papers relating to various aspects of Nirmala Devi’s time and works were presented by Basanta Panda, Jayanti Rath, Labanya Naik and editor of Nirmala Devi Kabita Samagra, Ratnamala Swain. The vote of thanks was proposed by Secy, Sahitya Akademi, Gopal Chandra Burman.
