Renowned Odia poet Gopalkrushna Rath passed away today afternoon at the age of 72. He was suffering from prolonged heart disease and died after a surgery at a private Hospital in Pune. He was survived by his wife Kiran and two grandchildren.
Born in 1945 in Sambalpur, Professor Rath was conferred with central Sahitya Akademi award for his poetry collection Bipula Diganta for the year 2014. He received many literary accolades including Odisha Sahitya Akademi award in 2003 and Jhankar Kabita Samman in 1984.
He has 5 volumes of poetry collections to his credit, i.e. Eklaa manisha, Kete Doora, Kuni Pua O Nishpaapa Sakaala, Bipula Digant and Aruna Udbhaasa.
He was also a member of Sahitya Akademi Odia Advisory board (2013-17).
Being a law professional he started his career as a judge. Later he left his job for an academic career. He was the head of the Law department at Sambalpur University. He retired from his job as the chairman of the PG council in the same university.
Tragedy of Life
His life was full of sorrows. But he never lost his patience and confidence. He was committed to literature till the end of his life.
He had lost hid little daughter years back by Cerebral malarial. His engineer son died untimely by bone cancer. Just five months back both his son and daughter in law passed away in a tragic road accident in Pune leaving behind a daughter of 16 years, and a son of 10 years.
Prof. Rath and his wife were devotees of Swami Nigamananda and they had taken Sanyaas. They were living in an Ashram almost detached from the material world. However after the accident they had to go to Pune to look after the children, who were also severely injured.
