5 govt officials abducted by Maoists in Odisha

Today morning Maoists abducted 5 government employees and a villager engaged in the Panchayat election process in Malkangiri district. The abducted officials were identified as Purusottam Behera, Hrusikesh Nayak, Prabin Soren, Lingaraj Majhi and Kaminikanta Singh. Maoists also abducted Manoranjan Sisa the son of a Jodamba village head.

According to source, abducted officials were in charge of Andarapali, Gajalmadi, Panasput, Jodamba gram panchayats in the Chitrakonda cut-off area. According to police sources, the abduction of the officials and the villager is an attempt to sabotage the Panchayat poll in Maoist-hit district.

The five-phase Panchayat poll in Odisha will begin from February 13 and conclude on February 21.

The Maoists warned people in Malkangiri to dismember their thump fingers, those who will cast their votes in Panchayat poll. Search operation going on by security personnel to rescue the abducted persons. During the 2014 general elections, the rebels in Malkangiri district had killed Samrudha Odisha’s MLA candidate Somnath Madhi.
